JBB tour recap

March 3rd, 2010

Greetings! JBB has returned from yet another tour. This one lasted 3 weeks and took us from Portland, ME to Orlando, FL. I have to say, when I saw this tour being planned, I was really psyched that we were heading south in February, which is a pretty dismal month to be in Boston. Little did I know that we would see snow as far south as Chapel Hill, NC! That aside, we had a really good tour. Sold out shows in Burlington, VT, Orlando, FL and Charleston, SC… and what can I say about the Boston House of Blues show? Unbelievable! Our brothers in Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad provided crucial support each night, despite some pretty serious vehicle problems. We met up with our friends SOJA in Wilmington, NC and laid down a GPGDS-JBB-SOJA smackdown on a sold out crowd. That was a crazy night… Also have to big up Tomorrows Bad Seeds from Hermosa Beach. They joined us on the last 4 shows in Florida. Super nice guys… And special love to Savannah and Tallahassee for turning out in full force on a Tuesday and Sunday, which are usually “slow” nights to be playing. You all brought the heat!

Most of us flew back from Jacksonville on Monday… back to the Northeast to tough out the rest of the winter. There are only 4 shows coming up in March, but they are good ones! Toubab Krewe will join us March 11 in Brooklyn and March 12 in Ithaca. Then the highly anticipated JBB/TK tour goes full force in April! We’ll be hitting Chicago, Denver, Seattle, Los Angeles, Vancouver BC and many places in between… Check out our site for all dates and all things JBB. It was great to see everyone at the shows… thank you for the love and support.

Philly show moved to Monday, February 8th - 8pm

February 5th, 2010

Because of the weather, Saturday’s show at The North Star in Philadelphia with JOHN BROWN’S BODY and GIANT PANDA GUERILLA DUB SQUAD has been postponed. All tickets will be honored at the new date, this coming Monday February 8th (doors 8pm). Thank goodness for a planned day off! Because of that, we are going to be able to have this amazing show happen after all this bad weather passes. Please stay safe this weekend and plan to join us on Monday for this very special night of Reggae, Dub, and Roots.
Enjoy your snow day and see you on Monday!

Thank you Colorado!

March 26th, 2009

We are having a great time on RE-AMPLIFY Colorado to California tour. Last week we played to wonderful crowds in Boulder and Denver with Blue King Brown; then we headed to the mountain towns. There were a few thousand happy dancing people during our outdoor shows in Steamboat Springs and Vail! What could be better than playing free outdoor shows in Colorado….playing them in March during snowstorms!

Rock to the Rhythm at The Roxy with John Brown’s Body

A lot of live reggae bands roll through Los Angeles but to me, modern reggae music has always been a mixed bag. Too many acts simply ape the styles of their forefathers without trying to bring something new to the table. So imagine my surprise when I discovered a band hailing far from the sunny shores of Jamaica (Ithaca, New York to be exact) that delivered the progressive reggae sounds I had been seeking since I wore out my copy of Legend long ago.

The band in question is John Brown’s Body, an eight-piece outfit that delivers some of the most forward-thinking reggae music in the world today. Last Friday night, they took over The Roxy in West Hollywood, and delivered a sizzling set in support of their number one reggae album, Amplify, and the newly released, remix counterpart EP, Re-Amplify.

“This [Amplify] is the record we’ve been wanting to make for awhile,” says drummer and founding member, Tommy Benedetti. “Right now things are really unified and good and this has probably been the best time of touring and traveling that I’ve ever had on the road.”

Rewind to the beginning of the night, where I sat with fellow LA2DAY cohort and reggae aficionado, Alex Storch, at The London Hotel. We waxed poetically about the joys of our first live reggae show to our favorite mix maestro, Matt Lindger, who served us up his special “Sensation” shot to start our maiden voyage off in style.

When we finally stepped foot into the Roxy, we were treated to the rockin’ sounds of Australia’s Blue King Brown, one of the remixers on “Re-Amplify,” and are supporting the band on their west coast tour. Led by the sultry and socially conscious lyrics of singer Natalie Pa’apa’a, the band unleashed an onslaught of reggae-infused grooves. New single “Moment of Truth,” hit hard but the highlight was their closing number, which worked in an AC/DC riff towards the end (”Thunderstruck” if you must know).

With our adrenaline surged, John Brown’s Body took to the stage and swiftly submerged us in reggae “riddims,” as we became lost in a sea of super heavy bass. Backed by a rhythm section that would make even The Revolutionaries envious, vocalist Elliot Martin delivered the message Bob Marley started and we were all his willing disciples.

One of the highlights from the set was “The Gold (Dubmatix Remix),” a track off Re-Amplify, that the band loves so much that they’re playing it out on this tour.

“I prefer that version actually. All of a sudden that turned up and I’m like, we gotta play it like that,” Elliot tells me after the show. It’s a personal favorite of mine and the live version they perform sees the band at the peak of their powers.

This would prove to be a special night as the band was joined on stage by original vocalist and founding member, Kevin Kinsella, who is performing a couple of songs from the band’s back catalog at a few gigs on the group’s current west coast tour. Despite no longer being an active member, nor having played with the group in over three years, the old magic was still there. Kevin and Elliot flowed effortlessly off each other, especially on “Among Them,” the title track off the band’s 1999 album of the same name.

When the band came back for the encore, they treated us to another tune off Re-Amplify, which saw Natalie Pa’apa’a join the band on the Blue King Brown version of “Conquering Dub.” This was another standout and closed out the show in spectacular fashion, further illustrating that you have not truly heard John Brown’s Body until you’ve listened to them play live.

“The live shows are super banging, super high-energy, and sonically very lush. We’ve even got kids crowd surfing these day,” Tommy tells me. “We’ve always had good shows out here, people are really receptive and there’s just a nice community vibe.”

While our show sadly didn’t sport any crowd surfing (LA is far too cool for that apparently), reggae music has always had the power to move the people’s minds as well as their feet and on this night John Brown’s Body showed us all how it’s done.

JBB Welcomes New Members to Horn Section

April 16th, 2009

Drew Sayers and Sam Dechenne have joined Scott Flynn to fill the John Brown’s Body horn section. Kal and Alex have moved on to work full-time with the band Rubblebucket Orchestra. They will always be part of the JBB family and we wish them the best.

Drew plays saxophone and most recently spent time performing and recording with Boston afro-beat group “The Superpowers”. Sam is an Oregon native and has traveled the world from Japan to Madagascar playing trumpet.

We all know that what doesn’t kill you supposedly makes you stronger, and for reggae band John Brown’s Body, the decimation of the band resulted in the most successful album of its 13-year career.

Bassist Scott Palmer died of cancer in 2006, and a few people left the band around the same time, leaving only two original members: drummer Tommy Benedetti and co-singer/songwriter Elliot Martin. They recruited new bandmates and continued to refocus the music, incorporating elements of hip-hop, indie rock, and drum and bass into a more progressive reggae sound.

The result was “Amplify,” which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard reggae charts last fall. The EP “Re-Amplify,” featuring remixes by several big-name producers, followed in March.

Most of the band’s members live in the Boston area, and they regularly play clubs such as Matt Murphy’s, Atwood’s, and the Alchemist; on Saturday the group moves up to the House of Blues. Benedetti, who lives in Somerville, called from a train headed to Philadelphia to talk about the new albums and his love of Slayer.

Q. You graduated from Berklee?

A. I did like three years.

Q. As much as you needed.

A. Yeah, exactly. Maybe a little more. [Laughs]

Q. Did you guys freak out when you heard that “Amplify” was No. 1 on the reggae charts?

A. It was a quite a day. I remember pretty clearly we were in Santa Fe, N.M.; we were on tour. And I woke up in the hotel and got a text message from one of the guys on our label, and I was pretty psyched, honestly. You know, these days . . . where we are, it doesn’t translate to all of a sudden, megastar.

Q. But what does it mean? Does it change anything?

A. It makes the record company happy. [Laughs] . . . It means that people are still interested in what we’re doing, which is really a blessing.

Q. In a blog post about U2 playing the Somerville Theatre, you wrote that you wished Slayer was playing instead. That seems surprising coming from a reggae guy.

A. I absolutely wish it were Slayer, and I would have been right up in the mix. . . . I think one of the things that makes JBB interesting is the fact that we do listen to a lot of stuff and we do incorporate different sounds and different vibes. When we play live, it’s a high-energy, aggressive show.

Q. Aggressive - I don’t think that’s something most people would associate with reggae music.

A. You know, I was raised on rock music. Zeppelin and Floyd and Slayer and Megadeth. . . . I still carry that with me to this day, thankfully.

Remix JBB for chance to DJ at Camp Bisco

May 22nd, 2009

remix

This spring we offered the stems to the JBB song “Zion Triad”. Within hours remixes of the track started flowing in and were heard on radio stations from as far away as Spain.

Through the success that you created, John Brown’s Body teamed up with ACID Planet and Disco Biscuits to offer a totally new remix opportunity. Today we posted stems from the JBB song “Ghost Notes” which appeared on our AMPLIFY record. This track is extremely close to our hearts because it pays tribute to our brother, late JBB bassist Scott Palmer, who passed away after a battle with cancer in 2006.

Click here to remix “Ghost Notes”. When you post your remix you will have a chance to win ACID software and maybe even a DJ set at this years Camp Bisco festival. You could join Disco Biscuits, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, STS9, and John Brown’s Body to performer your own set in front of thousands of people.

The Vermont Roots Reggae Festival -> Canceled

June 12th, 2009

John Brown’s Body will not be performing at The Vermont Roots Reggae Festival on June 20th. The festival organizers did not receive security permits needed to hold the festival from the City of Burlington. We sincerely apologize to all fans that were anticipating JBB’s performance.

We have booked a separate show at Higher Ground in early September with very special guests, which we will be releasing shortly. Be on the look out for full tour announcements soon. Hope to see you then.

JBB Update

June 30th, 2009

John Brown’s Body has begun recording a track for, ‘SHATTER THE HOTEL: The Songs Of Joe Strummer In Dub’. The release celebrates the anniversary of one of the greatest albums of all time, LONDON CALLING by The Clash. ‘SHATTER THE HOTEL’ is a tribute to Joe Strummer’s connection with Jamaican music via reggae and dub. The record aims to further explore the concept Joe Strummer once defined as the ‘punk-rasta interface’ and will benefit Strummerville: the Joe Strummer Foundation for New Music. This is JBB’s first studio project since recording AMPLIFY and it feels really great to be back in the studio.

Tommy B and Mike Keenan recently finished tracking for the new Adonai and I record, by JBB alumni David Gould. The album has been mixed Josh Driscoll, also a JBB alumni and will be released on Oct 1, 2009 on John Zorn’s Tzadik record label.
